Arts & Media School, Islington turned out to be even better than Gizem’s parents expected, as she went on to secure 18 GCSEs, with mainly A and B grades. Gizem is now 22 and studying for a BSc in business management at the prestigious Queen Mary, University of London.
She started the degree in September 2012.
Gizem’s journey to education success has not been a smooth one. After securing great GCSEs at Arts & Media School she went on to City and Islington College, where she did 4 A levels, including biology, chemistry and physics.
Gizem’s mother fell ill during the first year of the course and this affected her exam results. But Gizem bounced back. She switched to a BTEC National in medical sciences and went on to secure one distinction and two distinction stars. Gizem desired to become a doctor, but decided not to pursue this path, while at City and Islington College, because “I couldn’t see myself doing one thing for the rest of my life”. The change in Gizem’s chosen career path inspired her to study business management at university. “I wanted a degree course that was as broad as possible and developed an interest in business management because it is really broad,” she explained. HR, marketing and advertising are some of the careers that Gizem finds appealing. For now she is making the most of university life.
