Grace Dang attended Arts & Media School, Islington from 2004 to 2009.
What qualifications did you achieve at Arts & Media School?
3 A* 6As 1B 2BTEC (Distinction*)
When did you leave Arts & Media School and what did you do next?
I left in 2009 and went on to attend Woodhouse College, where I studied my A-Levels in Psychology, Economics and Mathematics.
What is your current role?
Final year Psychology BSc (Hons) student at The University of Nottingham. I have also just been accepted on to the TeachFirst scheme, and will begin teaching Maths in September!
In what way did your time at Arts & Media School influence your education and career progression?
During my time at Arts & Media, I went through the typical teenage phase of not really wanting to work. School was more a social opportunity, but with the constant push and encouragement from teachers, I finally decided it was time to get serious. I started working hard to complete coursework, I will always remember the continuous nights of staying after school to get my Art portfolio ready for examinations! Without the encouragement and stern words from teachers at Arts & Media School I probably wouldn’t have achieved the GCSE’s I did.
Now I have decided to work towards gaining a doctorate in Educational Psychology, I applied for TeachFirst, based solely on my experience at Arts & Media School. The traditional route into teaching is through the completion of 1 year training on a PGCE course. TeachFirst is different as they throw fresh graduates straight into challenging schools teaching whilst working towards their teaching qualifications. Many students whom come from a low socio-economic background don’t achieve their full potential, by joining TeachFirst I hope to become an inspiring teacher that can lead them to a better future. Their success shouldn’t be limited due to their family background. I know this, because I was one of them. Now is my chance to become one of those inspiring teachers, like the ones I had at Arts & Media School.
What is your fondest memory of Arts & Media School?
Flashbacks of break and lunch times always wander back into my head. The carefree moments just running around after the boys, and chit-chatting with the girls!
What is your favourite pastime?
I spend a majority of my free time at the gym.
What is your proudest achievement?
Currently I have to say being accepted onto the Teach First graduate scheme. I’ve been so worried I would be unemployed after graduation!
What advice on careers would you give to current Arts & Media School students?
Start researching early! And choose a field you really feel passionate about.
Find a job you enjoy, and you won’t work a day in your life!
