MiSST

We are delighted to offer free musical instruments alongside three years of classical musical tuition to all students joining us from September 2014, courtesy of our partnership with the Andrew Lloyd Webber – Music in Secondary Schools Trust programme (MiSST).

The MiSST programme aims to, develop team-working skills, improve discipline and enrich the learning of students through the creativity of music. Launched in 2013, we are proud to have been selected as one of only four secondary schools in London to participate in this inspiring scheme.

IMG_4858Our current key stage 3 have been given an orchestral string instrument alongside compulsory musical education for three years, all free of charge. The programme looks to extend the musical capabilities of each student, developing their self-confidence and igniting a passion for Music and the Arts. Each student will be given the opportunity to regularly perform in a number of Arts & Media School musical events, ensembles and orchestral groups, stimulating their learning and enabling them to showcase their musical talent to Arts & Media School students, parents and staff.

Music 2The programme originated at Highbury Grove School and supported by Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber who granted funding as a result of seeing the huge improvement in students’ engagement to not only music but their studies as a whole.

The students are being taught by some of the best musicians in the country from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama who are supporting the programme and working in Arts & Media School state-of-the-art music department.  This partnership looks to inspire and enrich the musical capabilities of each student, developing their self-confidence and musical talent whilst building personalised relationships with the experienced and gifted Guildhall student mentors.

Music 1“It was very exciting to receive my Viola and I have taken it home to practise.  I am really looking forward to playing in the concerts”. Year 9 pupil.

“I am delighted to welcome the partnership between Arts & Media School and the Music in Secondary Schools Trust supported by the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Their experience and knowledge of music will help to inspire and motivate our students in their own music and learning. Creative Arts is pivotal to developing professional skills and attitudes that can be used in all aspects of life and I look forward to our students and showcasing their talent in school performances and ensembles soon.Jonathan Dow, Head of Creative Arts at Arts & Media School.

“This project offers a life changing opportunity for our young people and we thrilled to be part of the MISST programme. Our pupils were simply delighted when they opened the instruments for the first time and then took them home. This initiative strengthens and underpins our vision of EVERY STUDENT A SCHOLAR”.
