“O You who believe, fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may be mindful of God.” (Quran 2:183)
Ramadan marks the start of the 9th month of the Islamic calendar and involves healthy, able Muslims (those who are mature and in good health) around the world, the opportunity to fast and abstain from food, drink, and impure thoughts between the hours of sunrise and sunset, allowing them instead to focus on prayer, connecting with and gaining nearness to God (Allah).
During this time, fasting is more than just abstinence; it is a means of worship and for Muslims to feel a closer and deeper connection with God. Fasting allows each individual to understand the pain and suffering of millions around the world, who live their lives in poverty and famine, leaving the individual feeling compassion for the less fortunate, patience, humility and gratitude for all that God has given them. Muslims are also encouraged to give to charity abundantly during the month.
At the end of the month, Eid ul-Fitr is celebrated with loved ones. It is a time of feasting and celebration for Muslims, with gifts exchanged between loved ones.
